The Who Gives Back To The Motor City

Friday, August 15th, 2008

The Who have recently announced that they will donate all of the loot they earn from their concert in Detroit on October 21.  Gleaners Food Band and FOCUS: Hope will be the beneficiaries of Pete Townsend, Roger Daltrey and whoever else comprises the band these days.   Roger Daltrey thinks it’s a swell idea, saying…

“The first gig we ever played in the U.S. was in Detroit and we have always had an affinity with this part of the country.  Pete and I are very aware of the problems people are having in Michigan and feel we should give something back for all the support we have had over the last 40 years.”

The band have also asked people attending the show to “Join Together With The Band” (how corny, but cute) and contribute to the charities as well.

What a lovely idea, eh?  It’s so refreshing to see musicians give back a little something to their fans, isn’t it?

Earnings From Who Gig to Benefit Detroit

Saturday, August 9th, 2008

The Who have announced that all of the earnings from their upcoming concert in October in Detroit will be given to various charities in that city. Roger Daltrey said:

“The first gig we ever played in the U.S. was in Detroit and we have always had an affinity with this part of the country. Pete and I are very aware of the problems people are having in Michigan and feel we should give something back for all the support we have had over the last 40 years.”

Yes, The Who have more money than they probably know what to do with, but it’s still nice to hear that they’re giving it away to help those in need.

Townshend vs. Daltrey is a Joke

Thursday, July 24th, 2008

The Who’s Pete Townshend is making light of reports that he and Roger Daltrey aren’t getting along these days. Rumour has it that Pete and Roger are feuding. Townshend says that the press is making too much out of the fact that he and Daltrey want separate dressing rooms (well, who doesn’t?) when on tour. Now that’s reason enough for a “feud” isn’t it? But of course!

In a post on his blog Townshend says:

“The delicious gossip from (blogger) Perez (Hilton) is that Perce (Daltrey) and I have separate dressing rooms. That may be true but we chat about the show in the steam room and whip each other with birch twigs.”

WTF???????

Paul McCartney Joins Billy Joel On Stage At The Last Shea Stadium Concert

Saturday, July 19th, 2008

Paul McCartney Concert

Tonight was the last concert ever at Shea Stadium. Back in 1965 The Beatles were the first to play at Shea Stadium and tonight, at the Billy Joel concert, Paul McCartney closed the show by performing: “I Saw Her Standing There” and “Let It Be”.

Also joined Billy Joel on stage, Roger Daltery who performed “My Generation” and Steven Tyler who performed “Walk This Way”.

What an amazing surprise that is that Paul showed up for that!

From New York, Paul is heading to Quebec where he is having a free concert on Sunday.

Roger Daltry Thinks Jack Black Should’ve Been A Rock Star

Thursday, July 17th, 2008

The Who’s Roger Daltry is gushing over his new friend Jack Black so much after seeing him perform last week-end, when The Who were honored at VH1s Rock Honors event in LA.  Jack Black joined Pearl Jam and The Flaming Lips to play a set of Who cover songs at the 3rd annual event which is held to pay tribute to groups that have influenced rock music.  Roger went on to say…

“He should have been a rock star. When you look at Jack Black, whatever he’s doing… it just always reminds me of that first initial feeling I had when I heard Elvis Presley singing Heartbreak Hotel.”

I’m a fan of Jack Black too, I think he’s funny and a good actor but now matter how hard I try, I can’t picture him as a rock star.  An actor goofing around trying to PRETEND he’s a rock star maybe, but not an actual rock star.

Pete Townshend Calls Downloading “Heartless”

Wednesday, July 16th, 2008

Pete Townshend slammed the digital music industry, calling internet downloading “heartless.” He prefers the old-fashioned system of buying a CD from a record store.  The Who guitarist explained:

“iTunes simply doesn’t have heart. It is software attached to a bank, nothing more, nothing less. Brilliant, but heartless.”

I can’t blame him for feeling that way. I must be old-fashioned as well because I still prefer going into a music store and looking for a CD or record.

The Who Says It Will Tour US

Friday, July 11th, 2008

The Who have announced the beginnings of a US tour this fall. Only two dates have been set so far, a two-night run at Los Angeles’ Nokia Theater on November 8 and 9. Fan club tickets and VIP Packages will be available next week on the band’s website, and they are promising that more dates will be announced soon. So this is great news of course for all fans of the band who have been hoping to see The Who perform for what could be the last tour for awhile.

The Who to Play Special Show in LA On Saturday

Friday, July 11th, 2008

Roger Daltry and Pete Townsend will get together tomorrow, July 12 in Los Angeles to play a special gig that will be taped and aired on VH1’s third annual “VH1 Rock Honors” next Thursday, July 17.   Roger and Pete will close the show with their 45 minute set, performing after the likes of the Foo Fighters, Pearl Jam and the Flaming Lips, who will do their versions of some of the Who’s hits.   Apparently Mr. Daltry is a big fan of the Foos Dave Grohl…

“I’m a huge fan of (Foo Fighters frontman) Dave Grohl,” Daltrey told Reuters during an interview at his hotel on Thursday. “He’s got the mentality of a rock god.”

After the brief concert, Roger will go back to lounging about until November when The Who returns to Japan for only its second time, playing a 4 date tour of that country.

Roger Daltrey: The Who May Never Release Another Album

Thursday, July 10th, 2008

Who frontman Roger Daltrey has hinted that the band may never release another album, saying they’ve ‘done enough already.’

In an interview with Rolling Stone, Daltrey said,

“It would be great to have something new, but it doesn’t really matter.”

Despite appearing skeptical about the band’s career in the studio, Daltrey did say that he still saw a future for the band as a touring unit.

In addition to Daltrey’s comments, guitarist Pete Townshend also spoke in vague terms about the band’s prospects. He said,

“I don’t know whether I can write songs for the Who. I don’t know if I can come up with some idea, some story, some angle, that will make me feel good about being the writer for the Who. Most important of all, I don’t know if I write something whether I should try to force the Who to carry it.”

Hmmm. Sounds like Pete Townshend is fresh out of ideas.
