Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr Stop Release of ‘Let It Be’ DVD?
July 30th, 2008Sir Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr have reportedly stopped the release of the Beatles movie Let it Be, according to the Daily Express. A source said:
“There has been talk of ‘Let It Be’ finally being released but now there has been a change of heart. The Beatles are still a massive global brand and it’s felt it won’t be helped if the public sees the darker side of the story. Neither Paul nor Ringo would feel comfortable publicizing a film showing The Beatles getting on each other’s nerves.”
I don’t blame Ringo or Paul for their feelings on this. I don’t like seeing The Beatles at each other’s throats . I admit that I associate the movie with bad times. It’s not one of my favorites.

A wise decision of Paul and Ringo’s part.

Bizarre! I didn’t know this and was just watching my (German-subbed) bootleg copy of the film 2 hours ago - preparing for a new YouTube movie.
Yes the ORIGINAL film is crap - especially because it’s so fragmented (it certainly has its moments, though). But there must be countless hours of film rushes that were left out from it. After all (from memory), the complete set of audio from these rushes cover something like 59 CDs! And there are any number of “extra” clips available here, there and everywhere on the net.
I know that Neil Aspinall had been remastering the footage and had commented on the acrimonious nature of the band’s relationship at that point. But everyone knows what was going down - and there are no fisticuffs or loud arguments. Anyone who’s been in a band (as I have) will probably have seen far worse.
OK - the film quality is bad, too (16mm blown up hastily to 35mm). But most people who were around at the time (and are still alive) either wouldn’t care or would have vision problems of one type or another by now.
Surely, like Blade Runner (for example), some “mega-edition” of the footage could have been made - with the ‘original version’ tacked on the the curious.
Then again, I’m probably still frustrated (after 39 years) that I didn’t get a copy of the original album “package” when it came out. But I was 9 or 10 years old - and it stretched the budget.
