Macca to Play Israel Gig
July 17th, 2008
Paul McCartney is preparing to make history - and fulfill a personal wish - to finally play his first gig ever in Israel. He is said to be on the verge of signing a deal to play to 250,000 people in Tel Aviv in September. Paul is keen to play, although security issues are a real concern, given the tensions in that region.
The Beatles were banned from Israel more than forty years ago because they were considered to be a possible threat to the country’s morals. However, the government of Israel sent letters of apology to Paul and Ringo - and the relatives of John and George - inviting Macca and Starr to play for the country’s 60th birthday celebrations. The letters said:
“We should like to take this opportunity to correct the historic omission which to our great regret occurred in 1965 when you were invited to Israel. We missed a chance to learn from the most influential musicians of the decade.”
I’ll say they missed a chance. Now this is all well and good, but it still sounds like a case of too little, too late. I’m sure that no matter what, the good people of Israel will go crazy over Paul. Better late than never.
