John Lennon Thinks The Beatles Were a Christian Band
July 13th, 2008A 1969 undiscovered BBC Radio interview with John Lennon has revealed that he hoped the Beatles music would lead people to discover Christianity. Lennon said…
“It’s just an expression meaning the Beatles seem to me to have more influence over youth than Christ. Now I wasn’t saying that was a good idea, ’cause I’m one of Christ’s biggest fans. And if I can turn the focus on the Beatles on to Christ’s message, then that’s what we’re here to do.”
This interview was done in 1969 in Montreal, during the famous Bed-in-for-Peace with Yoko Ono. It came 3 years after Lennon’s controversial remarks that the Fabs were “bigger than Jesus” and predicting that Christianity would “vanish and shrink”.
I wonder what remarkable event in his life made him have such a complete change of heart? Maybe having Yoko around and experiencing happiness with her is what did it.

John never changed his mind, heart or message. It was the press that quoted him out of context just like Marvin and Trevor conveniently do.
From the beginning, John did not intend to be a star, he wanted to be an artist and wake people up from their stupor. He made that point many times in different ways. He was not bragging about himself. He was pointing the mirror at the Christian world that made him an idol and chided them for it. Soon after, he literally destroyed his cuddly mop-top reputation to make an unpopular stand for peace, love and hope! Sound familiar?
Today, being a pop star and spouting some cause is in vogue. Back then, it was suicide.
