Paul McCartney Rocked the Liverpool Sound

Paul McCartney Liverpool

As mentioned before, Sir Paul McCartney performed to about 36,000 fans at Anfield Stadium in Liverpool on June 1st in celebration of Liverpool being chosen as the Capital of Culture this year. He shocked fans by opening with a fast version of Hippy Hippy Shake which set the tone for the incredible 2 hour show.

Dave Grohl of the Foo Fighters appeared as Paul’s special guest and did Band on the Run on guitar and vocals as well as got on drums for Back in the USSR. Dave was so into it, he banged his head against the mic while singing to Band on the Run.

Paul remembered Linda McCartney and dedicated My Love to her. However, the former Beatle also did a special tribute to his lads who are no longer with us with Olivia Harrison and Yoko Ono watching along from the stands. He took out his ukulele that George Harrison gave him and sang Something for George. A big surprise was when he did A Day in the Life for John Lennon. You can see the amazing performance of it in the video below. I was floored! It was one of the most touching performances I’ve ever seen even though Macca screwed up the words (to his own part) a little bit.

Before the concert ended, I looked up at the sky and said, “Thank you God.” What a dream come true for me to see this rock legend return to his birth town and perform in the city that made the Beatles rock royalty.

The opening acts were The Zutons and the Kaiser Chiefs. Both bands were superb!

The fireworks for this Live and Let Die were incredible, but I’ve come to expect that from Macca - he always shines pretty bright during his shows. Although I’ve seen McCartney in other types of venues, there’s nothing like seeing him in his hometown. It was my favorite Paul experience.
