Elton John’s Bet to John Lennon Pays Off In A Godfatherly Way
June 27th, 2008
If it weren’t for Elton John, Sean Lennon would have a totally different Godpappy. Picture this…the year is 1974 and John Lennon and Yoko Ono are on the outs. John Lennon is in the midst of recording Walls and Bridges and he askes Elton John to guest on his new song Whatever Gets You Through The Night. Elton agrees, only to make a bet with Lennon that if their new album went to Number 1, John Lennon would have to get up on stage with him next time he performed. Needless to say the album shot up to Number 1, one thing led to another and John Lennon was there with Elton at Madison Square Garden, performing together like they agreed. Enter Yoko Ono into the mix, she came to watch the show, and that night Lennon and Yoko reunited. JL was so grateful to Elton for having him in the show that he named Sir Elton his child Sean’s godfather when he was born. How sweet of John to make that gesture to his buddy Elton! Now that I know this story, next time I hear Empty Garden my eyes will well up with tears just a little bit more.
